Katherine: (after pulling out of the 2008 Emmy Award nominations) I am truly grateful for the honour that the Academy bestowed upon me last year. I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the Academy organisation, I withdrew my name from contention.
Katherine: (about getting criticized for defending "Grey’s Anatomy" co-star T.R. Knight, who is gay, when another co-star called him a name) Part of me was so shocked and appalled that people found what I said so unusual. You know what I mean? To me, it was the most natural thing in the world to do. I just felt like in that moment, I wasn’t trying to make a political point. I was simply trying to say that in light of us all being human beings, and in this whole race together, we should be kinder and more compassionate. It is never, ever right to actively seek to hurt someone’s feelings, and it doesn’t matter what your race, or your gender, or your sexual orientation are. Everything now has become being "politically correct," and that’s not what this was about.
Katherine: (about filming graphic birthing scenes in "Knocked Up") I’ve always planned on adopting anyway, but those scenes definitely reinforced my decision. I’m done with the whole idea of having my own children. It doesn’t seem like any fun to me. I don’t think it’s necessary to go through all that.
Katherine: (about being typecast as her "Grey’s Anatomy" character) We’re all familiar with how Jennifer Aniston moves and how Courteney Cox speaks, because of 10 years on Friends. But I think if I can find roles that are different enough from Izzie, I can find a way to shake her.
Katherine: I just want to play happy people. I’m a commercial kind of gal, and yeah, I would love to do a Monster, but I don’t have any grand aspirations to do an Academy Award-winning movie. I love Kate Winslet, but I know I couldn’t have her career. Her choices are so fascinating and character-driven. But you’ve gotta drag me to see movies like Babel and Children of Men. Honestly, The Notebook is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Katherine: I have always found it fascinating how much of a voice the public gives celebrities. It’s just interesting to me, because it’s not like we did that much to deserve having so many people hanging on our every word. I’m not quite at that level yet. But I’ve thought about the projects I’ve done and how often they are just kind of fluff, whatever, you know entertainment, and how often they actually have something to say.
Katherine: I’m grateful people think I’m beautiful or sexy, and I suppose it’s better than the alternative, but I do try to fight it a bit so it’s not all people see me as. And I’d love to one day be in a position where I could choose a role to showcase my creativity versus just my bra size.
Katherine: (When asked if people treat her differntly when they find out she’s a Mormon) If I were a still super-practicing strict Mormon, then people would be a little more cautious around me, but unfortunately I’m fairly vulgar, and I smoke and I drink coffee and I drink alcohol and I love to talk about religon.
Katherine: (asked what she remembered most from her honeymoon) Ahhh, the Pina Coladas! Oh my God, Cabos! The Esperanza Hotel and Resort and Pina Coladas – it doesn’t get a lot better.
Katherine: (On her fairy tale life) I have to knock on wood because any minute now the wicked witch will come in and ruin it all with a poisoned apple.
Katherine: (about her fake pregnancy belly in "Knocked Up") It wasn’t that bad. It’s pretty light, so it’s not that heavy or anything. It kind of forces you to waddle a little bit, but that’s probably a good thing, because it keeps you in character. I couldn’t believe it. They made a new one every day. They make that thing every single day, and it looks so lifelike. It has veins in it. It’s weird. It’s bizarre, but it was fun. The only problem was the smell. That only happened if the guys making them didn’t have enough time the night before, where you have to dry it out properly. You get it on you and it just smells rotten. It’s awful and everybody around you’s like, "Oh, Kate’s on the set with her belly," and it’s so disgusting.
Katherine: (On co-star T.R. Knight not commenting on the homophobic slur directed towards him by Isaiah Washington) It wasn’t even me who Washington was talking about, but I felt so infuriated and angry because that was the only opinion getting heard. Shouldn’t T.R have something to say? But he was right. To say nothing at all is the most dignified thing he could do for himself and for what really happened that day and for the whole situation. And it speaks volumen.
Katherine: (asked If she would leave “Grey‘s Anatomy“ to concentrate on films) It’s my intention to stay a part of the show. It’s been an amazing experience for me, and I’m really grateful for what it’s meant to my life and my career. It’s kind of the best of both worlds to have this steady job nine months out of the year then, on this three-month hiatus, go and do a film and be somebody else.
Katherine: I’ve been physically attracted to men that the rest of the world would think, ‘Why are you dating a guy like that?’ Humor and charisma are such an important part of sexual attraction. And I think it’s super important to have some commonalities; to have some of the same agendas and opinions and ideas about life.
Katherine: (on the launch of her own line of hospital scrubs from the ‘Katherine Heigl Collection‘) I have tremendous respect for women in the healthcare industry and I know that it is often a difficult and thankless job. I wanted to create a line of scrubs that would allow women to infuse some of their personality and style into their work apparel.
Katherine: Hair to me is not a priority. All I ever do is throw it in a bun. The only thing I know how to do is hot rollers, which is sort of over. I can’t style bangs even though I love them and I’m always like, ‘Let’s cut some bangs!’ And then I’m stuck with hair I can’t figure out.
Katherine: (On co-star Isaiah Washington using a homophobic slur directed towards fellow co-star T.R. Knight) I’m going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period. I’m sorry, that did not need to be said, I’m not okay with it… I don’t think [Washington] means it the way he comes off… But, T.R. is my best friend. I will throw down for that kid. I will beat you up. I will use every ounce of energy I have to take you down if you hurt his feelings.
Katherine: My most gratifying scene on Grey’s was probably when Izzie crawls into bed with Denny after he dies. I was unbelievably nervous about being able to pull off the gravity of emotions that someone might feel during such a tragedy.
Katherine: I just saw Brokeback Mountain last night and thought everybody was amazing in that. I thought Michelle Williams was phenomenal; I thought Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, I thought they were all phenomenal .. most depressing movie ever. That was sad.
Katherine: I’m not perfect. But clothes help. A good bra with some underwire definitely helps a lot!
Katherine: (About kissing scenes) It’s funny to me because it’s so not what it looks like — it’s staged and technical, and what makes it hot is how they edit it, slowing it down and adding music.
Katherine: (on kissing Justin Chambers) He’s a great kisser: not too aggressive, not too sloppy. He doesn’t leave spit all over you.
Katherine: I’m not a saint, but I’ve learned my lessons about this sort of thing, and it’s not emotionally healthy for me to sleep around. I’ve definitely been with people I probably didn’t love, and I always felt really vulnerable in those situations.
Katherine: I’m a real woman, a real size .. well I don’t even know what size I am. Between 4 and 6, depending on the day. I am not perfect.
Katherine: (on the portrayal of women in Grey’s Anatomy) Every woman is an individual, interesting and inspired in her own right. I think they really push that theory in this show and I love that. I’m proud of that.
Katherine: (On her Cosmopolitan cover appearance) This is huge for me. I’ve always read Cosmo and loved the covers, the fashion spreads and the sex advice. It feels sort of like an out-of-body experience, like it’s happening to someone else.
Katherine: The most pivotal point was at the upfronts in New York last year. People would come up to me and tell me how much they loved the show, and New Yorkers just don’t do that! The excitement for the show was just unbelievable. I’ve been waiting 15 years for this kind of success and I’m just so grateful and really thrilled. It’s definitely overwhelming at times. (About the success she received when starting Grey’s Anatomy)
Katherine: There are some big changes, and I’m excited as an actor to play all of this stuff that they are beginning for me, but it’s also hard to watch my character go through what she’s going through. I don’t want to give you more than that or they’ll kill me. (About Grey’s Anatomy)
Katherine: I think maybe I should do a sex tape. Look what it did for Paris Hilton! There’s never enough sex for me. The guy I’m dating now is just so fantastic in bed that half the time I just want to leave the handcuffs on and say, ‘I’ve got to run a few errands, but don’t you move–I’ll be back!’ I feel that everybody deserves fantastic sex and should settle for no less. I work hard and I deserve it.
Katherine: Oh God – I look back now, and it seems so gross. At just 14 years old, I had to wear a thong bikini. And then they used that scene in the trailer, so my entire school saw it!
Katherine: When I was 13, I was flat as a board and totally unhappy about it. I would write in my diary every day, ‘Oh, if I could just have a B cup by summer!’ I actually prayed for big boobs. So I developed at about 14, and then I was 15, 16, 17, and they kept going.
Katherine: (on their ‘winter wonderland’ theme for their wedding) Maybe some horses, sleigh bells. My sister is getting married this coming October so we’re doing that one first and planning hers. I get to kind of learn that way!
Josh Kelly: (on their ‘winter wonderland’ theme for their wedding) It was Katherine’s first idea. Once she started talking about it and what it would look like, I was set.
Katherine: There are still men who come up to me today and say, ‘You were really hot in that film!’ I was 14, for God’s sake!" (on her role in ‘My Father the Hero’)
Katherine: (About ‘Grey’s Anatomy’) I love when people come up to me and tell me that they watch it. And ask like, ‘Do you think Ellen and Patrick are going to get back together?’ I love that because we’re working hard and it’s great to know that that work is being appreciated.
Katherine: A girl told me my lips looked like somebody had pressed strawberry yogurt against my face.
Katherine: Guys are kind of retarded until they’re about 30.
Katherine: I prefer a kiss that is so much more than just a tongue in your mouth.
Katherine: I love changing my look. I would love, love, love to cut all my hair off into a really short, punky haircut.
Katherine: One of the most interesting things about that show, Roswell for me was that because Isabel was an alien, I got to do many things, so that was creatively satisfying. I think anyone’s fear of getting involved in a show that could run for several years is that you’ll be playing only one character for that long; that can get stale for an actor, so on Roswell, I really lucked out.
Katherine: I’m grateful people think I’m beautiful or think I’m sexy, and I suppose it’s better than the alternative, but I do try to fight it a bit so it’s not all people see me as. And I’d love to one day be in a position where I could choose a role to showcase my creativity versus just my bra size.
